Emission Reduction Plans

An Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP) provides a clear, practical roadmap to measure, manage, and reduce emissions over time.

Organisations are increasingly expected to show how they will reduce their emissions, and an ERP does just that.

What a Good ERP Covers

A well-structured ERP should include several key components:

  • A clear baseline showing where emissions come from.

  • Alignment with targets, often set using the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

  • A prioritised action plan with costs, savings, responsibilities, and timelines.

  • Plans to engage with suppliers, as most emissions sit in the value chain.

  • Data-improvement steps, so progress can be tracked.

  • Simple reporting to show results to boards, customers, and the public.

Our Recent Work with the Gisborne District Council

At MyImprint, we had the privilege of supporting the Gisborne District Council (GDC) in developing a comprehensive Emissions Reduction Plan. Our goal was to recommend actions that would reduce organisational emissions and further incorporate environmental sustainability into their operational culture.

We collaborated across teams and engaged with stakeholders to identify practical projects. We prioritised these projects based on their potential impact and cost-effectiveness.

The draft plan strikes a balance between quick wins and investments in longer-term reduction projects. To achieve lasting emissions reductions, GDC will finalise the plan and encourage organisation-wide adoption of the emissions reduction goals.

What We’ve Learned

Through our experience, we’ve gathered valuable insights:

  • Keep it Practical: Focus on cost-effective solutions, especially in the current economic climate.

  • Electrify Where Possible: Upgrading plants and equipment often yields quick returns on investment.

  • Engage Suppliers Early: Better data and smarter specifications can significantly reduce Scope 3 emissions.

  • Measure, Act, Re-measure: Implement an annual cycle to track progress.

If you’re being asked for an Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP) by customers, funders, or your community, we can help you set a baseline, choose the right actions, and report progress with confidence.
